The Onyx Boox Note Air opens up a world of possibilities, but all of them are grounded in simple, productive tasks that we seem to have veered away from in the era of entertainment tablets. And by turning off the automatic power off feature, and by setting the current window as the standby picture, now whenever I turn off the Note Air I can have my monthly calendar displayed on the screen even as it’s in standby for days or weeks, taking little to no battery life. It gives me a bird’s eye view of the month ahead. But if you do that, whenever you’ve got the case folded back on itself while you’re using the Note Air, it feels lopsided in your hand, and that’s even more apparent when you set it down on a table.įor me, one of my favorite ways to use the Note Air is I’ve loaded monthly calendar PDFs and use them to fill out my schedule.

The case comes with a little stylus holder that you’re instructed to install on the long end of the back cover. They also have an updated leather version. Thankfully Onyx makes a great affordable case that has a classy notebook vibe and does an adequate job of protecting the tablet. Boox Note Air AccessoriesĪlthough the Note Air is perfectly usable without any accessories, there are a few things you may want to consider. If you’re coming from a phone or iPad that needs to be recharged every few hours, trust me you’re not going to have any complaints about the Note Air. I used it for hours a day for the last few weeks, and I only charged once a week or so. But trust me, once you use the front light you’re going to want to leave it on most of the time. Now, if you were to leave the front light off, this device would get the same weeks of battery life as any other digital paper device. Why? Because when it’s on, the front light does take some power. But the Boox Note Air does have a handy feature if you want to make the tablet a little snappier. It takes time to flip those black and white balls, which is why it’s perfectly suited for reading and writing and not watching videos. Now, I don’t need to go on and on about the laggy speed of an E-Ink tablet. The real distraction comes from all the other devices nearby, so if I want to check something quickly I have my phone, laptop, desktop, iPad, and watch for those tasks. And although the internet is there to distract, it’s so impractical to use an e-paper tablet to browse the web that there’s zero temptation to do so. To me, the main purpose of this device is to be able to read and write, to organize my thoughts and my life, and if a few apps help me do that, I’m grateful. But what some people call “features” others may call “distractions.”
